Trellys Fishing Report January 9, 2026
Trellys Fishing Report 9th January 2026
I don’t need to talk about the heat this week, I think the mainstream media have that covered! Yes it has been extremely hot, but nothing that we haven’t seen before and nothing that we won’t see again.
The effect that the heat has on fishing varies from one spot to the next but generally speaking the fishing seems to have slowed down a bit in the rivers and really started to catch fire in the lakes.
Waranga Basin
This week I have a few reports from the Waranga Basin and they’re all good. One report was of small redfin and carp being caught off the bank on worms at Harriman Point. One report was of some huge redfin being caught on red and white soft plastics with very small jigheads in 2 to 3 meters of water. Apparently some of these fish were nudging 50cm.
The final report was of decent sized Yellowbelly and small redfin being caught on a “Hound Dog lime tiger”. I am unsure what that is exactly, but that’s the report that I received.

Lake Eppalock
There have been a few Yellowbelly caught at Lake Eppalock this week, both off the bank by anglers using bait and also by boat by anglers fishing with lipless crankbait lures.
Goulburn River
The Goulburn River fishing page on Facebook has come to life with heaps of photos of fish being caught there this week. Murray cod, Yellowbelly and trout in the upper reaches.
I even saw a photo of a bloke reeling in a Yellowbelly that he caught under a bubble float on worms. That bloke was me, and the guy that shared the photo is an IMPOSTER! He used one of my YouTube thumbnails and claimed it to be his work!
Contrary to the great reports from the Goulburn River, a friend of mine fished it for 2 days with bait near Murchison and didn’t get a single bite.
I guess there will always be good reports and bad reports.
Lake Hume
Lake Hume continues to fish very well. There have been quite a lot of Yellowbelly caught up there lately, along with increasing numbers of redfin. Most redfin have been quite small, but some have been decent sized fish.
To get a snapshot of the fishing at Lake Hume at the moment check out this great video that was shared on YouTube a few days ago.

Lake William Hovell
I fished Lake William Hovell on Tuesday evening with my friend Sonny. The fishing was very slow. We managed 9 or 10 small redfin between us and when I say small, these fish were literally no bigger than sardines. 10cm long at best.
There was no sign of any larger fish.
Lake Buffalo
I fished Lake Buffalo with my daughter and her boyfriend on Monday afternoon. We had a wonderful time and managed to catch quite a few small redfin in between swimming sessions.
The redfin were all tiny. They were bigger than the ones that we caught at Lake William Hovell, but they were still small.
Most of the fish were caught on a Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in “Firetiger” colour.

Lake Nillahcootie
There have been a few photos doing the rounds of some decent sized Murray cod caught at Lake Nillahcootie this week. Exactly how and where on the lake I do not know, but some of these fish were nudging the 100cm mark.
I had one amazing report of 9 legal sized Yellowbelly being caught there between two people this week. They were fishing with small yabbies next to a dead tree. It was a friend of my dad’s; he said that the fishing was amazing. Other than that report I have not heard much else from Lake Nillahcootie.
Lake Eildon
Lake Eildon has been fishing well for big Murray cod. Anglers in boats using Livescope technology seem to be having no trouble finding these big fish, but it was refreshing to see a photo of a nice Murray cod caught off the bank over there by Sean Mann this week too.
