Trellys Fishing Report 31st July 2026
In a world dominated by politics, wars, and horror stories, isn’t it just fantastic that we can turn our devices off and go fishing?
Overall, the fishing has been quite slow, but there have been a few fish caught around the place by dedicated anglers. And if I’m honest, I would rather sit on the riverbank and catch nothing than stay at home and watch the news at the moment!
Lake Mulwala
I spoke to a friend in Mulwala during the week and asked how the lake is fishing. Basically, the only people really fishing the lake at the moment are those with LiveScope fish finders who are catching quite a few fish, and people crayfishing.
As far as regular, non-LiveScope fishing goes, hardly anybody has been going out—and if they have, he hasn’t heard any reports.
Lake Eildon
Again this week, there have been some lovely Murray cod caught at Lake Eildon. Many of these big cod are caught at all hours of the night by anglers who are far more dedicated than I am!
The formula remains the same: LiveScope + big lures + lots of hours = very big Murray cod.
Ovens River
I have been crayfishing in the Ovens River twice this week and managed to catch a few crays each time. On both occasions, I caught my bag limit of two legal-sized crayfish. On my first trip, I kept my two legal crays and threw back 8 or 9 others—some oversized, some undersized, and some carrying eggs.
On my second trip, I caught two legal crays, but they were both on the smaller side of the legal slot limit, with one measuring 10cm on the dot. I chose to release those, along with half a dozen others I had caught.

I haven’t done any regular fishing on the Ovens River this week, but my friend Sonny did. He decided to take on the high, cold water and walked the bank flicking lures. He landed a nice 75cm Murray cod on a diving lure! That was the only fish he caught, and he didn't get any touches on his next trip out.
This is a reminder that in winter, if you walk the miles, you’ll get the smiles!

The Ovens River has dropped considerably since the recent flooding. The banks are muddy and slippery, and the river is still pretty high, but it is at a fishable level and has cleared up a lot.
Blue Rock Dam
Again, my friend Hanno Parker from Noojee Bush Goods has been catching quite a few fish in Blue Rock Dam.
Hanno has been fishing off the bank and catching small brown trout, small Australian bass, and small rainbow trout. I haven’t seen him landing any monsters lately, but in a state where the fishing has been so quiet, Hanno has been catching fish consistently.
Northern NSW & New England Region
There have been quite a few photos and videos circulating lately of some lovely Murray cod caught up in the northeast corner of New South Wales, including the New England region.
Gus Ford sent a few photos into Trellys of some of the lovely fish he has been catching in the Narrabri area. Well done, Gus!
