Trellys Fishing Report 2nd October 2026
Well, this sux! As I type this fishing report, the weather is superb, the fish are on the bite, and I am stuck at home with a nasty head cold! Oh well, I am getting better and will be fishing again in another day or two.
Now is a great time of the year to be a fisherman, as just about all waterways with fish in them are fishing well.
Just about every lake that has Yellowbelly in it is worth fishing right now, and the trout streams couldn’t be in better shape.
Ovens River
The Ovens River in Wangaratta is looking amazing at the moment. It has dropped to the lowest level that it has been since before winter and has cleared up significantly.
Upstream of Bright, the Ovens is looking fantastic, and quite a few brown and rainbow trout have been caught on fly and lures.

Lake Nillahcootie
Lake Nillahcootie continues to fish well. I have received stacks of reports from people fishing over there, as well as a trip that I made over there with my dad.
We managed to catch 8 Yellowbelly and 1 carp. One Yellowbelly was caught on a soft plastic bobbed up and down under the boat, and everything else was caught on worms just lowered under the boat.

Shore-based anglers have been catching their fair share of Yellowbelly too, with worms being the standout bait.
Lake Eppalock and Cairn Curran
I will group both of these lakes together this week as they have both been fishing exceptionally well. Lake Eppalock has been producing quite a lot of Murray cod, Yellowbelly, and redfin, while Cairn Curran has been mostly about Yellowbelly with a few cod and redfin caught as well.
It is great to see both of these lakes full and fishing so well again. Whenever a lake is dry for a few years and grasses grow inside the lake bed, when it fills and floods that grass, it’s always a great time to fish.
Lake Eildon
Lake Eildon has been fishing exceptionally well for Yellowbelly and Murray cod recently. My friend Chris Coyne and his family camped there last week and caught 22 Yellowbelly and 7 Murray cod. Of those fish, they kept 4 Yellowbelly.
Chris and his family caught all their fish just angling off the bank with bait.

There have been numerous photos shared online of Yellowbelly and Murray cod caught at Lake Eildon this week, including some monster Murray cod over 100cm long. These fish have been caught on lures fished from a boat.
Trout
The trout streams are looking mint, about as good as they get. There is a bit of rain forecast at the moment which may help to keep them looking great as we head deeper into spring.
Eventually the water will warm up, flows will reduce, and the fishing will slow down, but for now the streams are in perfect shape and fishing very well.
Victorian trout fishing isn’t what it used to be where all streams were stocked and catching trout was easy. It is much more hit-and-miss these days. You may need to move around and try several different streams before you find fish.
The current conditions are ideal for exploring and trying new places because if you find a stream with trout in it, they will most likely be biting.
