Trellys Fishing Report 27th March 2026

I went on a road trip with my friend Sonny during the week, fishing and exploring different waterways. The results were not great.

Firstly we fished at Seven Creeks at Miepoll with worms. Between us we managed to catch just 2 carp, one each. My carp was as skinny as a trout.

The water was very low. I suspect that the carp may have been trapped in pools and struggling for food during the hot, dry summer.

From there we fished the East Goulburn Main Channel near Arcadia for close to an hour. All we caught there was slime!

We left there and went to the Waranga Western Channel near Colbinabbin where we also caught nothing.

So we decided to head to the Waranga Basin to finish the day.

At the basin Sonny caught 3 or 4 small redfin on a 3cm Bullet lure, and I caught nothing before a storm hit and turned the calm lake into a violent waterway with large white cap waves as far as the eye could see.

We were at Harriman Point and rotated between the west side and the east side of the peninsula to try and avoid the waves.

We spent a lot of time in the car waiting for things to calm down, which they did just before dark… and then it rained for the rest of the night.

I fished in the rain for half an hour and got drenched… and caught nothing!

Lake Mulwala

My dad and a few of his mates have been fishing at Lake Mulwala this week. Dad caught a 70cm Murray cod trolling a Predator Lure behind the boat in a deep channel.

The other blokes have been catching a few smaller Murray cod as well, mostly trolling hard body lures.

Ovens River

I have been catching a few small Murray cod and trout cod on bait in the ovens River in Wangaratta. I have not caught anything of any size though.

Nathan Tanner had a completely different experience, catching a giant Murray cod in the middle of Wangaratta on a chicken breast soaked in Worcestershire source. The fish would have been over 100cm long.

Large Murray cod of this size are quite rare in the ovens River, especially upstream around Wangaratta however each season one of two turn up and this time it was Nathan's turn.  Well done Nathan, what a monster.

Murray River Mildura

There have been some nice Yellowbelly and Silver perch caught in the Murray River in the Mildura area this week, as well as the usual carp which are so prevalent in that section of the river.

Waranga Basin

Reports from the Waranga Basin have been hit and miss. I missed out, and I’m blaming the weather. Sonny caught 3 or 4 small redfin before the storm hit.

I shared a short video of the wind and waves on my Facebook page (Robbie Alexander photography And Fishing) and a few people commented telling me they had fished there recently and caught nothing.

Last weekend I was a guest at the Arcadia Fish Hatchery open day and was talking to a lot of people. Some had told me that Waranga basin was fishing slowly, but some reported catching a few redfin.

One guy showed me a photo on his phone of some nice redfin around 30cm long that he had caught from a boat the week before, and said that he also caught a couple of Yellowbelly which he released.

Lake Eildon

Not much seems to change with Lake Eildon. Each week I see a number of photos of large Murray cod that have been caught by anglers targeting them, usually with a live scope fish finder.

Something that has stood out to me this week is the 2 photos of dead Murray cod floating on the water. Both fish were very large.

This is a timely reminder to always look after your catch and not leave the fish out of the water for too long.
