Trellys Fishing Report 25th September 2026
Words can’t describe how much I love this time of the year. Just about every waterway that has fish in it is worth fishing at the moment. From trout in crystal-clear mountain streams to Yellowbelly and carp in dirty shallow lowland swamps, the fish are on the bite!
Waranga Basin
Reports from Waranga Basin have been slow recently. This could be because the fishing is slow, or because other nearby lakes such as Lake Eppalock and Cairn Curran are fishing so well that people are heading elsewhere.
I did get one photo of a 40cm Yellowbelly sent to me during the week that was caught on a bright green 10-foot Old Mate lure. The bloke that sent it said that he had also caught 8 or 9 redfin, but they were all small.
That is my only report from the Waranga Basin in recent weeks.
Ovens River
I have fished the Ovens River a couple of times over this last week. The target species was Yellowbelly, as it always is during the springtime. I have caught a couple of carp, a big Murray crayfish, and a few small Murray cod. Everything BUT Yellowbelly!
The crayfish and cod were all released as both of their seasons are closed, and the carp were dispatched. All were caught on worms, including the crayfish!

Lake Nillahcootie
I have not heard as many reports from Nillahcootie this week as I have in recent weeks, but I have still heard of a few Yellowbelly being caught.
Strangely enough, I have not heard of many Murray cod being caught in Lake Nillahcootie, just heaps of Yellowbelly. At Lake Eppalock, it’s the total opposite.
Lake Eppalock
There have been quite a few Murray cod caught at Lake Eppalock again this week, along with some nice redfin and at least 1 Yellowbelly that I know of, caught by Roger Dark on his “Fishing With The Fatboy” YouTube channel.
All of the fish that I know of that have been caught at Lake Eppalock have been caught on lures by boat-based anglers either trolling or casting lures.
I have not heard of any fish being caught off the bank, but I have a feeling that there have been plenty, and I just don’t know about it. If I lived nearby, I wouldn’t hesitate to go fishing there with bait off the bank at the moment.
Cairn Curran
Unlike Lake Eppalock, I have heard a lot of good reports of Yellowbelly being caught off the bank at Cairn Curran Reservoir this week. Worms and yabbies have been getting the best results.
There have been many photos shared online along with a number of great YouTube videos shared of Yellowbelly getting caught at Cairn Curran lately.
Speaking of YouTube videos, if anybody snags Brenton Clarke's fishing rod, please let him know. Poor fella!
If you want to see what happened to Brenton’s fishing rod, here is the video:
Goulburn River
Again, the only real reports that I am getting from the Goulburn River are coming from the upstream areas around Alexandra and Thornton where quite a few trout have been getting caught, including some monster rainbow trout.

I have not heard any reports of fish being caught downstream around Shepparton, but if I lived a little closer, I would head down there and try. I would fish with a bunch of worms for the afternoon and at sunset, and at this time of the year my expectations of catching something would be high.
Trout
Trout continue to bite well in the mountain streams. The streams are all in great shape now and are fishing well. Now is the best time of the year to go trout fishing before the water gets a bit too warm and the fish start to slow down.
Hanno from Noojee Bush Goods and his friends have been catching a lot of trout in the rivers around Noojee this week. That’s one area that has a very healthy population of trout that always seems to fish very well.
