Trellys Fishing Report
Trellys Fishing Report 20th August 2025
As much as I would love to say, the fishing has been amazing… it hasn’t. It’s been slow in most areas. BUT… with spring around the corner that should all change pretty soon.
Goulburn River
Fishing reports from the Goulburn River are as rare as hens teeth at the moment. Nobody seems to be catching anything in the river other than in the Eildon Pondage below Lake Eildon where some quite nice sized brown and rainbow trout have been caught this week.
I am sure the fishing will improve in Goulburn as soon as the weather warms up a bit.
Ovens River
I have fished the Ovens River a couple of times this week and all I can catch is small crayfish on my bait.
I did however catch a heap of carp in an anabranch of the Ovens River one afternoon. I was using worms for bait and caught 7 or 8 carp.
One evening last week I went lure fishing for Murray cod with my friend Sonny in Wangaratta. Sonny had 1 boof on a surface lure and that was it for the whole evening. Not a touch for me.
Lake Eppalock
Lake Eppalock continues to produce some nice redfin on both bait and lures. Anglers fishing from boats have definitely been having the best results using worms and small yabbies as bait.
Lake Eildon
Lake Eildon is probably the best freshwater fishing spot in Victoria at the moment. The keen “big cod” anglers are having a lot of success casting big lures. Some during the day, some at night and most successful anglers are using livescope fish finders to help them find the big fish.
I prefer to fish the old fashioned way, and spent an afternoon sitting on the bank near Bonnie Doon last week. Angling with worms, I managed to catch a very fat 53cm Yellowbelly, 1 big fat carp (which I fed to a pelican) and 6 redfin, two of which were big enough to keep.
I was very happy with this result given that it is August.
Lake Moodemere
Lake Moodemere is a small lake built from the flooding of a natural lagoon on the Murray River near Rutherglen. After flood events along the Murray River, Lake Moodemere often fishes very well for redfin with the occasional Yellowbelly and Silver Perch.
As the last flood event was a few years ago, the only fish being caught there at the moment are carp. The good news though, is that they are on the bite and most people fishing there are catching a carp or two making this a great choice for anybody just wanting to go fishing with a chance of catching something… anything!
Broken Creek
I fished in Broken Creek near Katamatite last week. Whilst the fishing was slow, I did manage to catch a couple of carp. I was hoping for a Yellowbelly but it didn’t happen.
I have had 2 reports sent to me of similar fishing in the Broken Creek recently, just a few carp and no Yellowbelly. In fact, it was those reports that inspired me to head over there.
Water has returned to the Broken Creek which is flowing at a steady pace. It is only a matter of time before a few sneaky yellowbellys start to bite there. We just need that little bit more warmth.
Further North
Up in NSW where things warm up a bit quicker, a friend of mine caught a lovely Murray cod on a lure in the Edwards River in Deniliquin this week.
Over the last couple of weeks I have made 2 trips up into the Riverina Region where I have fished the Yanko, Colombo and Billabong Creeks, as well as the Murray River.
I caught a lovely Yellowbelly in Billabong Creek near Moulamein a couple of weeks ago using worms as bait, and I caught plenty of carp in all of the other spots. All fish have been caught using worms as bait.
