Trellys Fishing Report 22nd May 2026

There is no way to sugar coat it, the fishing has slowed down. Finding fishing reports is getting increasingly harder as the fishing slows down and many anglers are busy pursuing other winter activities.

With that said those die-hard anglers among us are still getting out and still getting results. In fact, I have had a dream run lately. I have been catching Murray cod, trout, redfin, carp, blackfish and more. So there are still plenty of fish on the bite for those willing to put the time in.

Lake Hume

Lake Hume continues to produce some nice redfin. Success has been varying a lot from one boat to the next, but some anglers are catching decent feeds of redfin up there at the moment.

Fish have been caught on both bait and lures, with one report of redfin up to 30cm being caught on frozen freshwater shrimp.

Goulburn River

Apart from a few reports of trout being caught upstream around Thornton, the Goulburn River has been very quiet.

Ovens River

My stomping ground, the Ovens River has been fishing quite well lately. Like many other waterways it has been a bit hot and cold, but one day during the week I fished it with lures with my friend Sonny and we did well.

I managed to catch 2 Murray cod and 1 nice Yellowbelly on that trip, all on the same lure, a Blue Dog Diving lure in a green colour called “Jungle Venom”.  The fish were going crazy for this lure

Here is a link to where you can find that lure: https://www.trellys.com.au/collections/hardbody-lures/products/blue-dog-diver?ref=i68jzcdpol2e

Murray River below Yarrawonga

I saw a photo of a 120cm Murray cod caught in the Murray River at a spot called “One Tree” just downstream from Lake Mulwala during the week. The fish was caught on an orange Bassman DT Spinnerbait along with a couple of smaller Murray cod.

Billabong Creek

There have been a few Yellowbelly and carp caught in the Billabong Creek in NSW at Jerilderie. These fish were caught on worms next to the public camp ground.

Gunbower Creek

Roger Dark from the YouTube channel “Fishing With The Fatboy” has been catching some nice Murray cod in the Gunbower creek recently. Darkys latest video on the Gunbower Creek contains some great tips about trolling with a “sleeper” rod and is well worth a watch.

Trout Fishing

The trout fishing has been red hot in some areas lately. Basically, in areas where there are plenty of trout the fishing has been amazing. I have been having so much fun in the headwaters of the Ovens River.

Hanno from the Noojee Bush Goods shop, and YouTube channel has been catching heaps of trout down in Gippsland.

The streams in the Noojee area have been fishing exceptionally well lately and Hanno’s videos have been testimony to that.

Here is one of Hanno’s recent videos if you would like to have a look:
