Trellys Fishing Report 1st May 2026

A prolonged dry and calm period of weather in autumn is sometimes referred to as an “Indian Summer”. This name most likely comes from the smoky skies and calm mild weather.  This is caused by a very strong high-pressure system sitting off the east coast of Australia known as a “blocking high” which drives cold fronts south before they get to us, bringing us very stable weather. The smoke is caused by burn offs.

That is exactly what we have been experiencing for the last couple of weeks which has led to some quite good fishing in some areas.

Once this blocking high finally moves away it will start feeling like winter pretty quickly I think.

But for now, where have the fish been biting?

Loddon River

For yet another week the Loddon River has been the standout fishery in inland Victoria. At least from the reports that I have seen and heard it seems to be fishing the best still.

There have been Murray cod and Yellowbelly caught right along the Loddon River from Cairn Curran down.

The areas around Serpentine and Bridgewater seem to be the spots that get the most mention though.

Lake Dartmouth

I have seen a few reports of good trout fishing in Lake Dartmouth recently, including one from the Tatong Anglers Group Facebook page.

They said that despite the hailstorm and sketchy weather, the fish were still biting and laughs were plentiful.

Waranga Basin

I have only seen one report from the Waranga Basin this week. Steven Elliott trolled for 2 hours without a touch before BANG! He hooked and landed a 46cm Yellowbelly.

Steve said that the Yella hit like a freight train and bent the treble hooks on his lure.

Lake Nagambie

There have been a few Murray cod caught at Lake Nagambie of late. I have seen a few photos on Facebook and I also watched a great video by Brenton Clarke which I will link below this paragraph. Brenton trolled his Murray cod on hard body diving lures.

Brenton’s video can be found here:

Goulburn River

By all reports the Goulburn River has been a bit hit and miss lately. There have been a few photos of Murray cod and Yellowbelly turning up in my social media newsfeeds, but not as many as there were 6 weeks ago.

I think it is fishing like the Ovens River at the moment, with the best results going to those who show the most perseverance. It can be a long time between bites in this cooler weather.

Trout Streams

This is where my heart is at the moment, up in the hills fishing for trout in the clear mountain streams.

I have a few trout fishing videos lined up to share on my own YouTube channel in the coming weeks.

Although many streams are quite low, the ones with enough water flowing down them are fishing quite well.

I have had a blast catching both brown and rainbow trout over the last week or so.

I have been catching my trout on a variety of lures, but the Strike Tiger Micro Minnow in “Black Caviar” colour has been the best, followed by an 8cm Pontoon21 jointed minnow.

With rain in the forecast as I type, I am expecting there to be some pretty good trout fishing ahead over the next month or so.
