Trellys Fishing Report 18th September 2026
The two species of fish that are dominating fishing reports this week are Yellowbelly and Trout. Both are on the bite in a number of different locations. There are other species of fish being caught around the place too, but it is these two species that are running the hottest.
Lake Hume
Quite a few Yellowbelly are now being caught at Lake Hume. These Yellas are being caught by both shore-based and boat-based anglers.
Those fishing off the bank are getting their best results on live yabbies in the Bowna area of the lake.
Boat-based anglers are catching decent Yellowbelly using lipless crankbait lures and black curl-tail grub soft plastics.
I did see a photo this week of one nice Yellowbelly that was caught on an ice jig while targeting redfin.
There has also been an increase in the number of redfin being caught in Lake Hume, mostly as a by-catch for those targeting Yellowbelly.
I saw a photo shared online by Billy Pertzel of a nice trout caught in Lake Hume last week too.

Lake Hume has risen to over 85% and most species of fish are on the bite!
Ovens River
The Ovens River remains quite high and flowing fast, but it is starting to settle to a nice fishable level.
I have fished it a few times lately and have been catching a few carp. There has also been an increase in the number of Murray cod that are being caught. All of which have been released as the Murray cod season is closed.
I choose to leave my lures at home during the closed cod season to minimise my impact on spawning Murray cod. I also leave my regular cod baits like chicken and cheese at home.
I usually just fish with worms and occasionally live shrimp in the closed cod season in the hope of catching a Yellowbelly or even just having fun reeling in big fat carp.

Lake Nillahcootie
Lake Nillahcootie continues to fish well for Yellowbelly with several reports coming in. There have been a lot of Yellowbelly caught there lately, a few carp, a couple of Murray cod, and a friend of mine even caught a redfin while fishing off the bank.
Lake Eppalock
Like Lake Nillahcootie, Lake Eppalock continues to fish well. There have been some nice Murray cod caught there recently, mostly on trolled lures with the Blue Dog Diving Lure doing most damage.
I watched a cracking video from Roger Dark on his “Fishing With The Fatboy” YouTube channel last week.
Roger and his mate Neil trolled lures around Lake Eppalock for the afternoon and caught Murray cod, redfin, and Yellowbelly. One of the redfin was enormous. Darky’s video is well worth a watch and can be found here:
Cairn Curran
Cairn Curran Reservoir is another waterway that continues to fish quite well. There have been quite a few people heading there targeting Yellowbelly lately with mixed results.
Kevin Wild and his friends have been catching plenty, and Brenton Clarke headed over there and caught an absolute thumper of a Yellowbelly.
Brenton's video can be found here:
Goulburn River
The Goulburn River has been fishing well for huge rainbow trout in the Alexandra area. The VFA (Victorian Fisheries Authority) stocked a heap of very large ex-brood rainbow trout into the Goulburn River just before the trout season opened, and many people have been enjoying catching them.

I have not heard many reports of more modest-sized trout being caught in the Goulburn River though, nor have I heard any reports of anything biting in the lower Goulburn River around Shepparton.
I saw a photo of the Goulburn River at Murchison earlier today and I think it looks great. If I lived over there, I would be heading down there of an evening with a bunch of worms and throwing a line in.
