Trellys Fishing Report 13th March 2026

As we transition from hot weather to cold weather, the dynamics of many fisheries will change, some for the better and some for the worse.

One of the things that I am looking forward to is getting some colour back into the waterways, many of which are still quite dark, and in some cases black.

As the water cools, the darkness will slowly disappear, and this happens quickest in flowing water.

How has the fishing been?

Goulburn River

There have been quite a few Murray cod, Trout cod and Yellowbelly caught in the Goulburn River this week.

Around Shepparton there have been reports of really dark water, and anglers are concerned that there will be fish kills.

Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority shared a post on their Facebook page this week regarding this black water.

They took D.O. (Dissolved Oxygen) readings in the river and the oxygen levels are fine. The dark water is expected to flush out quickly with an environmental flow that is heading down the Goulburn River as I type.

Many anglers appear to be a bit put off by the environmental flows. Personally, I think that they would be a great time to fish.

I would be fishing as close as possible to the bank near newly flooded ground as that is where fish are likely to be feeding.

Ovens River

The Ovens River has been a bit hit and miss lately. I have been doing a bit of bait fishing around Wangaratta and have been catching a few small Murray cod and Trout cod, but that’s about it.

I haven’t caught a Yellowbelly for a while and even catching a carp has been tough.

I know this river very well, and I just know that one day soon I will go down there and be met with an amazing fishing session, it happens every autumn.

Murray River Mildura

There have been a lot of carp caught in the lower reaches of the Murray River around Mildura. I am happy to say that there have also been quite a few Yellowbelly and Silver Perch in the mix as well which is fantastic.

The YouTube channel “Aussies” fishes that area a lot with great results.

Murray River Albury

There have been quite a few Murray cod caught in the Murray River in the Albury Region lately.

I fished there myself last week and didn’t get a bite. I was fishing at Mungabareena Reserve and at The Waterworks reserve.

I was only bait fishing with worms in the middle of the day.

I think those people catching cod are actively targeting them, searching out deep pools, and fishing with known cod baits such as cheese, Bardi grubs and yabbies.

While sitting at the Mungabareena Reserve boat ramp I was talking to an older gentleman as he launched his boat. He told me that he has been catching a lot of Murray cod there lately, and his tip is to fish on the edge of the current, not too far back away from the current in the back water. (Which is what I was doing).

Waranga Basin

I received a fantastic report from the Waranga Basin this week. It was shared in a comment on one of my Facebook posts. I just spent half an hour looking for the comment so that I could get the information right and I cannot find it.

Basically, this gentleman has been fishing the Waranga Basin a lot and has been catching heaps of small redfin, and then out of the blue last week he hit the jackpot, catching several large redfin and a few nice Yellowbelly as well.

The redfin were all around the 37 – 43cm size.

Unfortunately I can not remember what depth he said he caught them in, or when he caught them, but what I can remember is that it was the Waranga Basin, so I can guarantee that there are some larger fish out there amongst the small ones.

Lake Eildon

This week there have been a lot of photos of large Murray cod being caught at Lake Eildon.

Well known fishing identity Kate Norman has caught some absolute monsters over the last week, among many other anglers who have also done well.

The report that has stuck in my mind the best was from Robert Ball. Robert caught some magnificent redfin and Yellowbelly at Lake Eildon last week.

Robert’s fish were caught in 12 meters of water using small yabbies as bait.

You can keep your big cod. If I was heading to Lake Eildon I would be taking small yabbies and chasing those big redfin.

With so much great fishing around, it is a shame that fuel prices are so high that none of us can afford to go fishing anyway!
