Trellys Fishing Report 12th June 2026
The recent rainfall has been amazing and will have some very positive impacts on freshwater fishing here in Victoria.
Lake William Hovell is now full and overflowing. This time last year it was only 40% full. Lake Buffalo is full at 60% and spilling over. The flood gates will lower to fill the lake to 100% when inflows drop during the springtime. (Or if we get flooding)
Lakes Hume, Nillahcootie, Dartmouth and Eildon are all now rising, albeit very slowly.
With the catchments now saturated, any rainfall that we get should run off into the lakes and it’s not even the middle of June. Things are looking good, let's just hope that winter and spring rain continues.
Now to the fishing report:
Ovens River
The Ovens River has been quite high but is now receding. The high water has really fired up the crayfish with just about everyone that I have spoken to saying that they have been doing well.

As far as finned fish go I have not heard of any being caught this week, but nor have I heard of anybody trying.
Lake Moodemere
I fished at Lake Moodemere last week and the fish were really biting well. Well, at least the carp were! I only fished for a couple of hours before heading over to the Murray River. In that time, I managed to catch 3 quite large carp and lose another, all using worms as bait.

Murray River
I fished the Murray River behind Lake Moodemere the same afternoon that I fished the lake. I fished with bait for the last part of the afternoon leading up to sunset. It was pretty slow but I did manage to catch a 50cm Murray cod on cheese right at sunset, along with a big fat carp on worms, and surprisingly… 3 turtles!
Further downstream in the Robinvale area there have been some large Murray cod caught, along with quite a few Yellowbelly.
In the section between Albury and Tocumwal, including Lake Mulwala the crayfish has been fantastic. I have friends that went crayfishing near Corowa last week and caught heaps of crays.
Also, social media has lit up with crayfish photos and videos from that area this week.
The Murray River is very low now that the water is being held back in Lake Hume. In saying that, the Kiewa River ensures that the Murray has a decent flow from Albury to Lake Mulwala where it is met with the Ovens River which is high, so from Lake Mulwala downstream the river is a bit higher.
Goulburn River
The Goulburn River fished quite well for trout last weekend near Alexandra and Thornton. There were some huge rainbow trout caught for the final weekend of the trout season.

Speaking of the trout season, it has now ended. The streams are now closed to trout fishing until the first Saturday in September, however the lakes remain open.
Last week the Victorian Fisheries Authority stocked a whole heap of trout into the Eildon Pondage. Some of these trout are ex brood stock up to 4kg.
Downstream in the Murchison and Shepparton areas there have been a lot of crayfish caught this season. The Goulburn River is crayfishing exceptionally well.
Dartmouth
Lake Dartmouth has been fishing quite well. There were around 700 trout caught over the long weekend in the Dart Cup fishing competition.
This looks great in writing but bear in mind that not everyone caught fish. Some people are saying it fished great and others are saying that the fishing was terrible, but the fact that 700 fish were caught tells me that the lake is worth fishing at the moment.
