Trelly's Fishing Report

Trelly's Fishing Report

Corio Bay

Right on our door step anglers found exceptional fishing for pinkie snapper, flathead and King George whiting. Corio Bay held the mentioned species in great numbers with the edge of the stingray bay spoil grounds a hot spot for the King George Whiting. Flicking soft plastics around the Geelong water front was a safe bet in crossing paths with a pinkie snapper or flathead. The odd large pike was also landed as a by catch with some pike reaching an impressive 80cm.

Clifton Springs

Over at Clifton Springs the grass beds in three to four meters of water attracted anglers seeking squid with size three artificial jigs in a white colouration achieving the best results. Although the squid were not all monsters they made up for it in numbers with bag limit captures possible. There still has been the odd snapper lurking around the point Richards channel with anglers making use of their fish finder achieving the best results.

Swan Bay

The Swan Bay channel on a run in tide saw anglers have a ball catching a mixed bag of Silver Trevally, pinkie snapper and some impressive sized flathead. Either soft plastics or bait will work with gulp turtle back worms a standout soft plastic.

Queenscliff

Queenscliff was still Kingfish central with many anglers putting in hours fishing the RIP. Kingfish to 8kg were boated with fresh or live squid rigged heavy enough to get down to the desired depth the best bait. Large schools of Australian Salmon kept anglers busy when the kingfish were not on the bite. Salmon to 3kg were reported and had a liking to lures intended for kingfish. Bell Reef on a low tide was a squid hot spot with anglers casting larger artificial jigs banking some of the better squid.

Ocean Grove / Barwon Heads

Offshore kingfish were taken on the troll out from Ocean Grove with white ocky skirts rigged with a squid strip doing the damage. Offshore the Kingfish were not always the same size as the rip with a lot of smaller model fish around. Gummy sharks in 30 meters of water were a great option when the kingfish were not playing the game.

Hopkins River

Heading West and Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt along with Andrew Dellaca spent Sunday fishing the Hopkins River for bream where they had no trouble in finding numerous bream. Soft plastics did the job for the guys with some bream nudging almost 40cm.

Lake Bullen Merri

This week really saw Lake Bullen Merri fire up for Chinook Salmon. Bait fishing once again accounted for the larger fish. Michael Evans from Victorian Inland Charters boated some thumping big fish during the week.

Lake Purrumbete

Next door lake Purrumbete still held good fishing with brown trout & rainbow trout taking a liking to mudeye suspended under a float.

Barwon River

The Barwon River around Queenspark is superb fishing for redfin and carp at present. Casting small hardbody lures will do the trick on the redfin and if you want to tangle with a big carp then corn kernels on a light running sinker rig.

Goulburn River

A few good numbers of Cod around 45 to 60cm in the Goulburn River around the Horse Studs along the Northwood Road Mitchelltown and all the way up to the Wineries at Nagambie, as well as quite a few Yellowbelly and Redfin. Best method has been bobbing Worms, Shrimp and small Yabbies around the Trees in the deeper parts of the River, or casting Spinnerbaits and Jackal T/N 60’s in the shallower parts of the Backwaters late afternoons. Plenty of good sized Yellowbelly and Redfin at Kirwans Bridge, fishing the Willows the best method, Worms and Shrimp the best bait, try a tree, if nothing in 20 minutes, move to the next, you shouldn’t have too many troubles catching your bag. Murchison to Toolamba is fishing well, plenty of small fish with the occasional good sized Cod and Yellowbelly amongst them, Bassman 4 X 4’s and Pirate Spinnerbaits and Codger and Old Mate lures working well, and Cheese, Bardi Grubs and worms the best bait. Bait Fishing with Cheese has been the best method around Shepparton at the moment for Cod.

Shepparton / Rushworth

The Main Eastern Channel has been the Highlight of the Shepparton area lately, plenty of good sized Cod on Spinnerbaits and Cheese, all the way from Dargalong Road to Invergorden area, even check Google maps and try the little channels the feed off the Main Eastern Channel. Redfin are still available in big numbers at Waranga Basin, trolling small deep Hardbodies in anywhere from 4 to 6 metres of water, either off the Boat Club or Harrimans Point, finding the schools, then bobbing Ice Jigs or Soft Plastics the best method, a good depth sound will help a lot. The Outlet Channel along Tatura/Rushworth road has Redfin in plague proportion caught on Worms, mainly really small one’s, but great fun for the Kids. Still a few Yellowbelly in the Western Channel at Middle Road on Jackal T/N 60’s and ZX40’s.

The Murray River

Reports that Lake Mulwala fishing very inconsistent at the moment, so most fisho’s have changer focus to the River below Yarrawonga with great results, plenty of Cod from 45cm to 70cm on a mixture of Codger Surface Lures, Old Mate Divers and Size 1 Stumpjumpers, Greens and Oranges seem to be the standout colours. Yellowbelly have been thick in the same areas, taking the Size 1 Stumpjumpers. Berri to Turrunmbery is fishing much the same. Heaps of Yellowbelly at Wentworth on Jackal T/N 60’s, they are hitting the lures on the drop, so watching your line is a must.

Lake Eildon

Mansfield local Ryan  has been smashing the Redfin and Yellowbelly in the Delatite Arm at Lake Eildon, over 100 Redfin in various sizes and Yellowbelly to 50cm all on white Soft Plastics fishing both the Trees and the Open Water.

Out of Town

Whitey just got back from a sensational trip to Tassie where he landed numerous trout of outstanding quality mainly from rivers. Whitey mentioned one trip he caught and released just over 50 trout in a session.
